The recent announcement regarding the cessation of a prominent gaming expo has surprised many in the industry. The UK-based WASD event is no longer set to take place due to unforeseen circumstances, leaving fans and participants disappointed.
The gaming exhibition has been called off as the organizer faces insolvency. According to reports from various news outlets, one of the co-founders revealed that economic pressures, such as increased expenses and diminished demand for exhibition space, led to the decision to discontinue the event. This financial strain has rendered it unsustainable to continue hosting the expo.
Launched in 2022, WASD was a relatively new addition to the gaming landscape, stepping in as a substitute for the now-defunct EGX Rezzed event, which previously showcased independent and smaller gaming projects. The event was strategically timed to coincide with the London Games Festival, which has already outlined its plans for the 2025 edition of the festival.
This cancellation raises concerns about the viability of dedicated physical gaming events in the UK. Notably, EGX has recently aligned with MCM Comic Con, and the latest edition of Insomnia was also affected, as it did not occur due to staff reductions at Player1 Events, its parent company.
In reflecting on the cancellation of WASD, Lilley showed appreciation for the assistance provided over the event's journey, highlighting the appreciation for community backing in challenging times.
