It’s quite unexpected, but Twitter’s initiatives against spreading misinformation on the platform now relate not only to military conflicts and Covid-19 but to climate change information as well. Let’s see how Twitter is going to fight misleading climate change ads.
No to Climate Denialism!
As Twitter says, it’s strictly against climate denialism and wants to make it impossible to monetize ads that contain climate change information that doesn’t match the scientific consensus. The company insists that the climate crisis is real and that contradicting ads must disappear from the platform. The company adds that its decisions about the legitimacy of ad content will be made with the assistance of some “authoritative sources.” One of them is United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
At the same time, Twitter promises to soon publish its plans on how to provide its users with reliable content on the matter. According to the social network, sustainability talks have increased by over 150% since the last year. Besides, the discussions of environment decarbonization (reduction of greenhouse gas emissions) have also increased by around 50%, while waste reduction hits over 100% in growth.
Other big tech brands, including Facebook and Google, have also changed their policies to stop climate change misinformation. However, they’ve been accused of failing to apply practical measures accordingly. Hopefully, Twitter manages not to repeat its mistakes as the number of interactions with climate change-related posts has seen significant growth in 2021-2022.
We’ll See…
If Twitter really manages to eliminate climate change misinformation, the platform will be able to gain much more control over the topics covered by users. What does it mean for you? You can tell us your opinion in the comments and share the news with friends
