Once again, the movie adaptation of the popular video game "Sonic the Hedgehog" holds the position of having the best opening weekend for a video game adaptation. The title was held by the first movie adaptation, "Sonic the Hedgehog".
Sonic the Hedgehog holds its place among other classic video games like Mortal Kombat, Super Mario, Pokémon, etc. Currently, it’s carving out a place for itself in the video game adaptation niche.
In 2020, the first Sonic movie replaced "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" after opening to a record-breaking $58 million. The second Sonic movie has broken this record with a whopping $71 million debut at the box office. With these amazing box office successes, it seems Paramount Pictures plans to expand the franchise into a cinematic universe. Before the pandemic and the whole lockdown that followed, leading to theaters in most parts of the world shutting down, the first Sonic movie made a total of $319 million worldwide. With the new movie grossing roughly $141 million worldwide, it is on track to surpass the record of its predecessor.
The timing seems to have played a significant role in the early success of Sonic 2, as it did in the first film. Its main competitor at the box office was Sony's Morbius, which has gained a lot of criticism and saw a 74% drop in the sale of its tickets from opening weekend last Friday. After earning $39 million in its debut, it went on to make a meager $10.2 million in domestic revenue. Along with the timing, it seems the casting of Idris Elba has also contributed to the success of the movie.
Have you seen the Sonic movies? Which of them is your favorite? What are your thoughts on Mobius? Do you think it deserves all the criticism it gets? Please share your thoughts with us in the comment section below.
